Your wedding is quite possibly the most photographed day of your life. And, of course, there are so many things you want to make sure are done perfectly on the big day—from seating arrangements and music to catering and décor. Naturally, some aspects of planning unexpectedly take a back seat, including your wedding day makeup. But, let’s bring your bridal beauty look back to the top of the list (even if it’s just for a little while).
Having worked in the wedding industry for over 12 years as a professional makeup Artist and Hair stylist I have been lucky to work at some incredible locations across the UK and abroad. Having worked in the Seychelles, France, Spain , Dubai, Zambia & Italy to list just a few of the destination weddings.
Having spent nearly twelve years in the wedding industry as a professional hair and makeup artist, i have seen so many kinds of weddings from Churches, castles, Boats, Farms, barns, beaches, islands and even a submarine. Every wedding has been different and of course every bride has been different but all of them had their own magic. The past few years has been a lot of Boho inspired weddings with natural glowy makeup , soft wavey hair and messy buns. And in the last few months I have seen a switch to more structured hair and chignons and smokey eye makeup and matte skin but with lots of highlighter. But there are so many wedding hair and makeup looks that can be achieved and I love working with my brides to achieve their dream look.
The Trial
I always suggest a trial for my clients as a way to get to know them and their style, the theme of their wedding and what style of dress they are having, flowers, colour scheme and location. As this will all help to create the wedding hair and makeup look.
During the trial I don’t set a time limit as it’s a chance to explore ideas and chat about what my brides want and try different styles out. The trials either take place at my studio in West Sussex or I go to the clients home. Once the trial is complete I send my clients a list of all products used and images from the trial.
Wedding prep
I will usually advise in the trial if I think it’s useful for my brides to invest in some facials or home treatments before the wedding day to ensure their skin is at its very best. These don’t have to be super expensive treatments and can be as simple as applying moisturiser or lip balm or even drinking more water.
you want your skin to be as hydrated as possible to the makeup glides onto the skin effortlessly.
1. Take Your Wedding Season Into Consideration
“A bride should absolutely tailor their foundation to the season and climate. “If it’s winter you will want a foundation that won’t look too dry or flat. And if it’s summer you don’t want anything that gets too shiny too fast. If your wedding takes place from daytime to nighttime, opt for something long-wearing. And a fixing spray is a must have item.
2. Choose a Lipstick or Balm You Feel Comfortable In
The Lips are very important and I always tell my brides to spend some time at the makeup counter and try on all the possible shades, and ‘when you know, you know!'”
If you have smaller lips I always suggest a glossy / shiny lipstick and definitely nothing matte as this will only make the lips look smaller.
lip stains are a great way to keep the colour in place all day and I am a massive fan of lip stains from YSL, they are natural and hydrating.
Also your lipstick of choice will forever be your wedding lipstick so it’s always so nice to keep as a memory, so spend time finding your perfect shade.
On the big day i will always come to the location of where the Bridal party is getting ready. And allow ample time to get everyone ready as the morning just goes by so fast! If I am doing the whole bridal parties hair and makeup I bring one of my team with me to ensure everything runs smoothly. I will always stay until the very end to do last mintute touch ups of hair and makeup. Sometimes I also stay and change the makeup to an evening look or change the hair style. If you have a very large bridal party, that’s not a problem I work with a very skilled team of hair and makeup artists, so you can be rest assured you are in safe hands and that your morning will run to plan.
